About The Artist
Shawn Bourks is a beadwork artist of Michif (Cree-Saulteaux) and mixed European heritage. Shawn’s Red River Métis family roots stem from the Ross Family in Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan. Other family names include Short, Parenteau, Cuthbert Grant, and McGillis. Born in Richmond, BC, Shawn now lives in East Vancouver with her partner, their beautiful baby boy, and their beloved chiweenie Sophie. Shawn has had the privilege to learn beadwork and traditional teachings from Métis artists and knowledge keepers Lisa Shepherd, Adele Arseneau, and she has also been mentored by her Ma, Sandy Fraser, and Aunties Vicki, Lee, and Wendy Fraser. To Shawn, beadwork is more than an artistic outlet. It’s a direct connection to her Métis roots, Ancestors, to Creator, and to community. Beadwork with good intention; an expression of love, culture, and resilience. Shawn plans to pass on her knowledge of the craft and Métis teachings to her son (if he wants to bead) and to Michif relatives. Their goal is to continue Michif culture in a good way.
